UltraWave Max UF20J Ultrafiltration System
Advanced Whole-Property Water Filtration
The UltraWave Max UF20J is a high-performance point-of-entry water filtration system designed for residential and light commercial applications where cleaner, clearer and more consistently filtered water is required throughout a property.
Unlike a small point-of-use filter that treats water at a single tap, the UltraWave Max is installed on the main incoming water supply. This allows water to be filtered before it is distributed to bathrooms, kitchens, appliances and other outlets throughout the building.
Manufactured by Global Water Solutions, the UltraWave Max combines two stages of filtration with automatic membrane flushing, pressure monitoring and water-hammer protection in one compact system. It is designed to provide high-flow filtration while keeping routine maintenance relatively straightforward.
The system is particularly well suited to homes, offices, guest houses, lodges and other light commercial properties where sediment, fine suspended particles, turbidity and microbiological contamination may be concerns.
For applications where water quality is uncertain, FlowSpec can also help determine whether filtration alone is suitable or whether the UltraWave Max should form part of a broader water treatment solution.
Dual-Stage Water Filtration
The UltraWave Max uses two dedicated filtration stages.
Water first passes through a 5-micron grooved polypropylene sediment filter before reaching the system’s 0.1-micron membrane filtration stage.
This staged approach is important because larger particles are removed before reaching the membrane. Reducing the sediment load helps protect the finer filtration stage, maintain flow and extend membrane service life.
Stage 1: 5-Micron Sediment Filtration
The first stage uses a grooved polypropylene sediment cartridge installed inside a clear 20-inch jumbo filter housing.
This filter is designed to capture suspended particulate matter such as sand, silt, rust, pipe scale and other sediment commonly found in municipal, borehole, storage-tank and water-distribution systems.
The grooved cartridge design provides a large filtration surface area and good contaminant-holding capacity, allowing the prefilter to protect the more specialised membrane downstream.
The transparent housing also provides a practical advantage. Instead of opening the housing simply to inspect the cartridge, the condition of the sediment filter can be visually monitored during normal operation.
A built-in pressure gauge provides an additional indication of filter condition. According to the manufacturer, a pressure reduction of approximately 0.7 bar or 10 psi can indicate that the sediment cartridge requires replacement.
This provides a much more practical maintenance indicator than relying solely on a fixed replacement interval.
Stage 2: 0.1-Micron Membrane Filtration
After the sediment stage, water passes through the UltraWave Max’s 0.1-micron membrane.
This stage provides considerably finer filtration than the initial 5-micron sediment cartridge and is designed to capture fine suspended particles, colloidal material and bacteria.
The membrane works primarily as a physical barrier. Contaminants larger than the effective filtration threshold are retained while water and much smaller dissolved substances are able to pass through.
This makes the UltraWave Max particularly useful where the objective is to reduce particulate and microbiological contamination without using reverse osmosis for the entire property’s water supply.
The combination of 5-micron prefiltration followed by 0.1-micron membrane filtration provides progressive treatment while helping protect the membrane from unnecessary sediment loading.
Whole-House and Point-of-Entry Filtration
The UltraWave Max is designed as a point-of-entry, or POE, filtration system.
A POE system treats water close to where the main supply enters a property rather than filtering only one individual drinking-water outlet.
When correctly sized and installed, this means filtered water can be supplied to multiple outlets throughout the property.
It can therefore be used for homes, residential estates, guest houses, offices, lodges, clinics, small businesses, hospitality applications and other light commercial installations.
The UltraWave Max may also be considered as part of a treatment system for water supplied from storage tanks or suitable boreholes. In these cases, the source-water quality should be assessed first because borehole and stored water can contain contaminants that physical filtration alone will not address.
High Flow Rates for Whole-Property Use
One of the UltraWave Max’s significant advantages is its ability to provide substantially higher flow than a conventional under-counter filtration system.
Manufacturer specifications indicate flow rates of up to 33 litres per minute at 1 bar, 50 litres per minute at 3 bar and 58 litres per minute at 5 bar.
This makes the system suitable for installations where several outlets may require water at the same time.
Actual system performance will depend on factors including inlet pressure, source-water quality, sediment loading, pipe sizing, cartridge condition and the overall plumbing installation.
Correct sizing remains important, particularly for larger homes and commercial properties with high simultaneous water demand.
Automatic Membrane Flushing
A major feature of the UltraWave Max is its built-in automatic membrane flushing system.
During normal filtration, particles retained by the membrane can gradually accumulate on its surface. If this build-up is not managed, membrane fouling can reduce flow and filtration efficiency.
The UltraWave Max uses an adjustable timer-controlled flushing system that periodically opens the drain valve and flushes accumulated material from the membrane.
Regular automatic flushing helps maintain membrane performance, reduce fouling and extend membrane service life while reducing the need for frequent manual intervention.
A heavy-duty 12 V brass solenoid drain valve controls the flushing process.
For a point-of-entry system that may process thousands of litres of water, automatic membrane maintenance is a significant advantage over simpler filtration systems that rely entirely on manual servicing.
Built-In Water-Hammer Protection
Rapidly closing taps, solenoid valves, pumps and other plumbing components can create sudden pressure surges known as water hammer.
Repeated pressure shocks can place unnecessary stress on filters, housings, valves and pipework.
The UltraWave Max includes a built-in water-hammer arrestor designed to help protect the filtration system from these sudden pressure surges.
This is particularly useful in permanent whole-property installations where filtration equipment becomes part of the property’s main water infrastructure.
Durable, Serviceable Construction
The UltraWave Max is mounted on a robust stainless-steel support structure with a wall-mounting option, creating a compact and organised filtration installation.
The complete system measures approximately 410 mm × 200 mm × 780 mm and has a manufacturer-specified net weight of approximately 19 kg.
The system has also been designed with maintenance in mind. Replaceable filter components, pressure monitoring, a transparent sediment housing and automatic flushing allow routine maintenance to be carried out without the complexity associated with larger industrial membrane plants.
Replacement sediment filters and UF membrane components are available separately, helping extend the service life of the complete system rather than requiring replacement of the entire unit.

What Can the UltraWave Max Help Remove?
The UltraWave Max is primarily designed for physical water filtration.
The sediment and membrane stages can help reduce sand, silt, rust, pipe debris, suspended sediment, fine particles, colloidal material and bacterial contamination within the performance capabilities of the membrane.
Reducing these contaminants can improve water clarity while helping protect downstream plumbing, valves, appliances and additional treatment equipment.
The system can also provide useful prefiltration before technologies such as UV disinfection, activated carbon filtration or other water treatment equipment.
What Does the UltraWave Max Not Remove?
It is equally important to understand the limits of ultrafiltration.
The UltraWave Max is not a reverse osmosis system and does not automatically remove substances simply because they are present in water.
Many dissolved minerals, salts and other small molecules can pass through this type of membrane.
It should therefore not automatically be specified for treating high TDS, salinity, hard water, excessive calcium and magnesium, fluoride, nitrates or dissolved chemical contaminants.
Where dissolved salts or other dissolved contaminants are the problem, reverse osmosis or specialised treatment may be more appropriate.
Where hardness and scale are the primary concern, water softening or conditioning may be required.
Where microbiological water quality is critical, additional disinfection such as UV treatment may also form part of the complete system.
The correct combination depends on what is actually present in the source water.
Start With the Water, Not the Equipment
There is no single filtration system that is ideal for every water source.
Municipal water, borehole water, rainwater, tank water and surface water can contain completely different contaminants and therefore require different treatment approaches.
For uncertain or untreated supplies, a water analysis is recommended before selecting equipment.
Testing can identify parameters such as turbidity, hardness, pH, iron, manganese, dissolved salts, nitrates and microbiological contamination. FlowSpec can then use this information together with the required water demand and application to recommend an appropriate treatment solution.
This prevents unnecessary equipment from being installed while helping ensure that important contaminants are not overlooked.
