The five-stage system starts with a 5-micron polypropylene sediment filter, which removes particles such as dirt, rust, sand and pipe scale.

The second stage uses granular activated carbon to reduce chlorine, taste and odour.

A third protective carbon stage uses BLOCKFREE technology to provide further carbon treatment while helping protect the RO membrane.

The fourth stage is the reverse osmosis membrane itself, followed by a final activated-carbon polishing filter to improve the taste of the purified water.

The AquaWave Classic is an excellent option for customers who value a conventional, serviceable RO design with replaceable cartridges and straightforward access to individual components.

An RO storage tank is used with this type of system and should be sized according to the installation and water demand.

  • Maximum production: approximately 284 L/day
  • System type: bracket
  • Filtration: 5 stage
  • Application: home, workplace and light commercial drinking water

AquaWave Premium 75 GPD

Compact, Enclosed and Easy to Maintain

The AquaWave Premium provides the same 75 GPD class of reverse osmosis purification in a more refined, all-in-one cabinet design.

Like the standard Premium system, the Eco has a rated maximum RO production of approximately 284 litres per day.

The absence of a booster pump means that correct incoming water pressure is particularly important. RO membrane production decreases when feed pressure is too low, so FlowSpec will assess the available pressure before recommending this configuration.

Where adequate pressure is available, the Premium Eco provides a neat, efficient solution for residential, hospitality and workplace applications.

  • Maximum production: approximately 284 L/day
  • System type: enclosed cabinet
  • Filtration: 5 stage
  • Booster pump: no
  • Application: suitable homes, offices and businesses with adequate incoming pressure

What Is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse osmosis is a membrane-based water purification process.

During normal osmosis, water naturally moves across a semi-permeable membrane towards the side containing a higher concentration of dissolved substances. Reverse osmosis applies pressure to reverse this process.

Incoming water is forced through a very fine RO membrane. Water molecules pass through the membrane while a large proportion of dissolved salts and other contaminants are rejected and discharged in a separate concentrate stream.

The purified water that passes through the membrane is known as permeate or product water.

This makes reverse osmosis fundamentally different from ordinary sediment or carbon filtration. Conventional filters are highly effective for particles, chlorine, taste and odour, but an RO membrane can also address many substances that are dissolved in the water.

Why Use Reverse Osmosis?

Water can appear perfectly clear while still containing high levels of dissolved minerals and other substances.

Reverse osmosis is particularly useful where the objective is to reduce total dissolved solids, commonly called TDS, and improve the overall purity of drinking water.

Depending on the source water and the specific system, RO treatment can reduce dissolved salts and may reduce substances such as sodium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, fluoride, nitrates and certain metals.

It can also provide a physical barrier against extremely small microbiological contaminants.

The final result is water with substantially fewer dissolved impurities than could normally be achieved using sediment and activated-carbon filtration alone.

RO is therefore widely used for drinking water, food preparation, coffee and beverage applications, hospitality, workplaces and commercial processes where consistent water quality is important.

Five-Stage Water Purification

The AquaWave RO systems use multiple treatment stages rather than relying on the RO membrane alone.

The exact cartridge configuration varies according to the model, but the treatment process typically begins with sediment filtration to remove particles such as dirt, rust, sand and pipe scale.

The water then passes through activated-carbon treatment. Carbon helps reduce chlorine, unpleasant tastes and odours while also protecting the RO membrane from compounds that could shorten its service life.

A further protective carbon stage provides additional treatment before the water reaches the reverse osmosis membrane.

The RO membrane performs the main dissolved-solids separation stage.

Finally, purified water passes through a polishing carbon filter before reaching the drinking-water tap. This final treatment helps improve the taste and freshness of the product water.

Using several stages allows each component to perform a specific function while helping protect the more specialised RO membrane.

FlowSpec AquaWave Reverse Osmosis Range

FlowSpec offers four AquaWave configurations, allowing the system to be matched to the required water demand, installation type and available water pressure.

System Capacity Configuration Filtration Best Suited To
AquaWave Classic Up to 284 L/day Open bracket 5 stage Homes and offices
AquaWave Premium Up to 284 L/day Enclosed cabinet 5 stage Homes, offices and hospitality
AquaWave Premium Eco Up to 284 L/day Cabinet, no pump 5 stage Suitable installations where low energy use is preferred
AquaWave Pro G500 Up to 1,514 L/day High-capacity cabinet 5 stage Commercial and higher-demand applications

Actual production depends on incoming water pressure, temperature, water chemistry and membrane condition.

Which Reverse Osmosis System Do I Need?

Selecting an RO system should not be based only on its daily production rating.

FlowSpec considers the incoming water quality, TDS, hardness, chlorine level, available pressure, temperature, required daily water volume and peak demand.

For a typical home, an AquaWave Classic or Premium system may provide more than enough drinking and cooking water.

Where inlet pressure is suitable and a pump-free system is preferred, the AquaWave Premium Eco may be appropriate.

Applications such as coffee shops, restaurants and businesses with higher continuous demand may be better suited to the AquaWave Pro G500.

Water quality is equally important. High levels of sediment, hardness, iron or other contaminants may require prefiltration or conditioning before the RO system to protect the membrane and maintain reliable performance.

FlowSpec can evaluate these requirements and recommend the complete treatment system rather than simply selecting an RO unit by capacity.

RO and Hard Water

Reverse osmosis can reduce calcium, magnesium and other dissolved minerals, but very hard water can also cause scaling on the RO membrane.

Membrane scaling reduces production, increases waste and can shorten membrane service life.

Where incoming water hardness is high, FlowSpec may recommend additional anti-scale treatment or water softening ahead of the RO system.

Our OneStop+ anti-scale systems and other water-conditioning solutions can be incorporated where appropriate to protect downstream equipment.

The correct treatment depends on the water chemistry and intended application.

RO and Sediment

An RO membrane should not be used as a replacement for proper sediment filtration.

Water containing excessive sand, silt, rust or suspended solids should be filtered before reaching the membrane.

Good prefiltration reduces fouling and allows the RO membrane to concentrate on what it does best: separating dissolved contaminants from the product water.

For installations with significant sediment loads, FlowSpec can integrate an RO system with our wider range of water filters and filter housings.

Does Reverse Osmosis Remove Minerals?

Yes. Reverse osmosis reduces many dissolved minerals, including calcium and magnesium.

This is one of the reasons RO water has a much lower TDS than the incoming supply.

For most drinking-water applications, this is precisely the objective of the treatment process. However, customers who prefer mineralised drinking water can discuss additional post-treatment options with FlowSpec.

The correct configuration depends on both the incoming water chemistry and the desired finished-water characteristics.

Reverse Osmosis Produces Reject Water

RO purification separates incoming water into two streams.

One stream passes through the membrane and becomes purified product water. The other carries the rejected dissolved material away from the membrane and is discharged as concentrate or reject water.

This reject stream is a normal and necessary part of the reverse osmosis process.

The ratio between product water and reject water depends on the system design, pressure, membrane, temperature and source-water quality.

Correct system selection is therefore important where water efficiency is a major consideration.

The AquaWave Pro G500 is specifically designed as a higher-efficiency continuous-flow RO system and incorporates automatic controls to support efficient operation.

Where Can FlowSpec RO Systems Be Used?

The AquaWave range is suited to a wide variety of purified-water applications, from a single kitchen drinking-water tap through to higher-demand commercial installations.

Common applications include homes, offices, boardrooms, restaurants, coffee shops, guest houses, hotels, lodges, commercial kitchens, dental practices, beverage applications and workplaces.

For industrial or process-water applications requiring capacities beyond the AquaWave range, FlowSpec can assess the requirement and recommend an appropriately engineered water-treatment solution.

Maintenance and Filter Replacement

All reverse osmosis systems require maintenance.

Sediment and activated-carbon cartridges have finite service lives and must be replaced periodically. The RO membrane also requires eventual replacement, although its useful life can be considerably longer when the system is correctly specified, the prefilters are maintained and the feed water is suitable.

Service intervals depend on water consumption and incoming water quality rather than time alone.

High sediment loading, excessive chlorine, hardness, iron or poor source-water quality can shorten component life.

Regular servicing protects the membrane, maintains water quality and helps ensure that the system continues to produce water at the expected rate.

FlowSpec can supply replacement filters, membranes and compatible RO components for the AquaWave systems we supply.

Start With Your Water Quality

The best RO system is the one designed around the water entering it.

If the source is borehole water, stored water or another supply of uncertain quality, FlowSpec recommends obtaining a water analysis before specifying the treatment system.

The results can identify factors such as TDS, hardness, iron, manganese, pH, turbidity and other parameters that may influence the RO design.

The required pretreatment can then be selected before the membrane rather than discovering problems after installation.

This approach can improve system reliability, protect the membrane and help achieve the required finished-water quality.
